THE WEEK IN REVIEW

Team of the Week: Lake Travis

The Cavs take this space for the second week in a row after marking the only team to go 2-0 during the week (Westlake only played once). Lake Travis (26-3, 8-2 District 25-6A) won at Austin High (62-59) and defeated Lehman (58-45) and now stands alone in second place following Bowie’s loss to Anderson. Cade Parrett’s 14 points led the Cavs in their win against Lehman.

Player of the Week: Calvin Williams, Austin High

Williams, a senior, recorded a double-double with 25 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Maroons (10-12, 4-6) during a 62-51 victory over Del Valle Jan. 18 in a must-win game to keep their playoff hopes alive. Williams also recorded 13 points earlier in the week against Lake Travis.

The rest of the district

Westlake (24-3, 9-0) remained perfect in the district and atop the standings with an 81-53 win over Lehman. The Chaps, who have won nine in a row, are two wins away from clinching a playoff spot . ... Bowie (17-7, 7-3) started the week with a 65-46 win over Hays behind 16 points from Coleton Benson before falling 50-48 to Anderson on Jan. 18. ... Anderson (11-13, 3-6) received 24 points from Max Smith to keep its playoff hopes alive with the win over Bowie. ... Del Valle (10-12, 5-5) opened the week with a 71-61 win over Akins for its fifth district win. ... Akins (8-15, 1-9) defeated Hays Jan. 18 to earn its first district win thanks to 14 points from Sherrod Whitley and 12 from Alfred Ortiz. Carlos Rocha had 14 points to pace Hays (14-13, 3-7).

THE WEEK IN PREVIEW

Games of the Week: Lake Travis at Westlake Jan. 22; Austin High at Anderson Jan. 25.

The Cavs travel inside Loop 360 to face rival Westlake in an early-week showdown of the district’s top two teams. The first matchup between the two went down to the wire, but the Cavs might be without leader and point guard Ryan Bormann, who suffered an injury Jan. 18 against Lehman. ... Neither the Maroons nor Trojans has much room for error the rest of the way if they want to make the playoffs, making this game on Jan. 25 crucial for both. The loser may find a path to the playoffs almost impossible. Anderson plays at Akins and Austin High hosts Hays earlier in the week, so both teams have the chance to enter the contest on three-game winning streaks

Other games

Del Valle, who currently holds the district’s fourth playoff spot, travels to Lehman (13-12, 4-6) on Jan. 22. The Cardinals need to compile victories with Westlake, Lake Travis and Bowie still left on the schedule, while the Lobos will be looking to get back into a tie for the last playoff spot and are done with Westlake and Lake Travis. ... Bowie hosts Akins Jan. 25 in its only game of the week. ... Westlake travels to Del Valle Jan. 25, while Hays hosts Lehman the same day.
